LGBTQ+: understanding sexual and gender diversity

To better understand

During adolescence, young people discover, explore, and affirm their identity. During this period, most of them will experience their first attractions and romantic feelings and consolidate their gender identity.

There is a wide range of romantic and sexual orientations (for example, heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, pansexuality, aromantic) and gender identities (for example, cisgender, non-binary, queer, trans, agender). To learn more about the terminology for different sexual orientations and gender identities, consult the glossary from the Émergence Foundation (French only). You can also watch the video “Gender Unicorn” to better understand the dimensions of sexual and gender diversity.

Some young people may experience deep questions and concerns about their sexual orientation and gender identity, while others may not at all. It is important to listen to them and accept them as they are. Parental support is crucial for the well-being and health of every young person. It is important to respect and support each teen in their development and to teach them a culture of diversity respect. Your support as parents is also essential in preventing homophobia and transphobia.
