They can be used to do research, stay connected with others, relax during downtime, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The problem?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many apps are designed to create frequent, small bursts of pleasure in the brain. Because their brains are more reactive to screens, children have a higher risk of developing an addiction. This can affect their physical and mental health, sleep, grades, and many other parts of their life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why children need to learn to use screens in a balanced way. That means:<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n<div class=\"accordions-block\">\r\n        \n<div class=\"accordion\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\r\n    <h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\r\n        <a class=\"accordion-link\" role=\"button\" href=\"#panel-less-screen-time-324\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-less-screen-time-324\">\r\n            <i class=\"fa-classic fa-regular fa-hourglass-start fa-xl\"><\/i>Less screen time         <\/a>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div class=\"accordion-panel\" id=\"panel-less-screen-time-324\" style=\"display: none;\">\r\n        \n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quebec.ca\/en\/health\/advice-and-prevention\/healthy-lifestyle-habits\/healthy-screen-habits-among-youth\">Qu\u00e9bec government<\/a> recommends a <strong>maximum of 2 hours<\/strong> of recreational screen time per day for children aged 9-12. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recreational screen time includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social media<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Video game<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chatting online<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shows and broadcasts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"accordion\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\r\n    <h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\r\n        <a class=\"accordion-link\" role=\"button\" href=\"#panel-age-appropriate-content-626\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-age-appropriate-content-626\">\r\n            <i class=\"fa-classic fa-regular fa-check fa-xl\"><\/i>Age-appropriate content        <\/a>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div class=\"accordion-panel\" id=\"panel-age-appropriate-content-626\" style=\"display: none;\">\r\n        \n\n<p>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/\">Common sense media<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pegi.info\">PEGI<\/a> websites to find out what\u2019s appropriate for your child\u2019s age. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t rely on the age ratings on video games, which are set by the game manufacturers themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that just because \u201ceveryone\u2019s doing it\u201d doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s appropriate for your preteen.<\/p>\n\n\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"highlight-box box-style-dark\">\r\n    <div class=\"row align-items-center\">\r\n        <div class=\"col\">\r\n            <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>A video game like <em>Fortnite<\/em> (rated 13+) is not remotely appropriate for preteens, even though many play it. Other popular games like <em>Minecraft<\/em> and <em>Roblox<\/em>, although rated for everyone, can be problematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These games often contain gambling-type elements such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prompts to spend real money to advance in the game;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Random rewards, like a lottery;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notifications that encourage players to log in multiple times a day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the most popular social media platforms are also not recommended for preteens. Explain that it\u2019s better to sit with that uncomfortable feeling than deal with the risks of addiction or exposure to inappropriate content that come with the game or the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How your preteen acts in relationships is what will determine whether or not they\u2019re liked by their peers. your child:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is more vulnerable because of ADHD, ASD, or other individual challenges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has too much screen time;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has Also keep them out of other isolated parts of the house so you can more easily supervise, discuss and watch together.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Turn off screens at least one hour before bedtime<\/strong>. The brain needs to wind down before sleep.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remove access to screens and Wi-Fi at night<\/strong>.
