But there are ways your teen can manage stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what about anxiety? What\u2019s the difference between stress and anxiety? How can you tell if your teen has anxiety? For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A test at school;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A sports meet;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An argument at home or at school;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A breakup;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A new job;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n<\/section>\r\n    <div I have more control over the situation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can I make the situation a little more predictable?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have I ever experienced another situation like the one that\u2019s causing me stress? If so, what strategies did I use to cope with it?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can I feel more in control if I fail? Could I try again?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, before a test, your teen could use the following strategies like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Study to feel more in control;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask the teacher what important points to focus on. Your teen will be better prepared, and the test will be more predictable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about coping with stress, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/humanstress.ca\/programs\/stress-n-go\/i-am-an-adult\/\">Stress N\u2019 Go by the Centre for Studies on Human Stress (CSHS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n<\/section>\r\n    <div class=\"container-deco deco-bottom container-bg-color-white\">\r\n            <\/div>\r\n\n\n\r\n    <div class=\"container-deco deco-top\">\r\n            <\/div>\r\n<section class=\"container-eklo add-table-content container-padding-4em\">\r\n\r\n    <div class=\"container\">\r\n                <div class=\"container-eklo-content eklo-deco\" >\r\n            <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>What about anxiety?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anxiety is thinking about a catastrophic situation that isn\u2019t happening and might never happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the fear of a danger that doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anxiety is the fear of fear itself!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And just like stress, it causes a whole range of unpleasant sensations.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"highlight-box box-style-orange\">\r\n    <div class=\"row align-items-center\">\r\n        <div class=\"col\">\r\n            <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p><strong>Fact<\/strong><br>(<em>Quebec Health Survey of High School Students, 2022-2023<\/em>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>35% of high school students have anxiety.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-md-font-size\"><strong><strong>If your teen has anxiety, they can choose to:<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"grid-icon-cards grid-icon-cards-bg-color-blue\">\r\n\r\n    <div class=\"row justify-content-center\">\r\n        \r\n            \r\n        <div class=\"col-12 col-md-4 col-lg-4\">\r\n            <div class=\"grid-icon-cards-card h-100 has-background has-blue-background-color\" >\r\n                <div class=\"grid-icon-cards-card-animation h-100\" data-aos=\"fade-up\" data-aos-delay=\"100\" data-aos-offset=\"200\">\r\n\r\n                    <div class=\"media-card\">\r\n                                                    <i class=\"cards-media-icon fa-light fa-classic fa-regular fa-person-running fa-2xl\"><\/i>\r\n                                            <\/div>\r\n\r\n                                            <div class=\"card-content align-items-start\">\r\n                            <h3>Flee it<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Avoiding a situation only causes the fear to grow and anxiety to set in.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the moment, avoidance helps the teen to feel calmer. But this only delays the problem and can even make it worse.<\/p>\n<p>Take public speaking, for example. When a teen successfully avoids having to speak in public, anxiety disappears. Ideally, avoid alcohol, nicotine (smoking, vaping), cannabis, and other drugs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explain what stress and anxiety are.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell your teen that their sensations are normal, without downplaying them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remind them that their sensations are only temporary, even if they are uncomfortable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Help your teen find ways to feel better. Here are some things you can do together:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify the causes of their stress using the N.U.T.S. model;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talk about ways to address these causes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Break tasks down into small steps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify, together, what your teen can and can\u2019t control.
