These beverages are readily available and placed near juices and soft drinks at the store. They may seem harmless, but they contain a large amount of sugar and caffeine, which can negatively affect the health of teens. Let\u2019s take a look at just what these energy drinks are!<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n<\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n<\/section>\r\n    <div class=\"container-deco deco-bottom\">\r\n            <\/div>\r\n\n\n\r\n    <div class=\"container-deco deco-top container-bg-color-white\">\r\n            <\/div>\r\n<section class=\"container-eklo add-table-content has-background has-white-background-color container-padding-4em\">\r\n\r\n    <div class=\"container\">\r\n                <div class=\"container-eklo-content eklo-deco\" >\r\n            <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To better understand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>So what are energy drinks anyways?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Energy drinks are sweetened beverages that contain a large amount of sugar and caffeine.&nbsp;<\/strong>These beverages may also contain vitamins, minerals or \u201cnatural\u201d ingredients or stimulants. This may give the impression that they are a good choice to improve health. However, they can pose health risks, especially for teens. And the risk increases when they are mixed with alcohol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A regular 473 ml energy drink may contain:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>14 teaspoons of sugar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>180 mg of caffeine, the equivalent of 2 cups of filtered coffee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A few examples of energy drink brands: Red Bull, Guru, Prime, Monster and Rockstar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Why should I be concerned about my teen drinking energy drinks?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. <strong><strong>Energy drinks contain a lot of sugar.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Energy drinks are sweetened beverages, like juice, fruit cocktails and flavoured milk, soft drinks and sports drinks. Consuming a large amount of sweetened beverages can have several negative effects on your teen\u2019s health:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Type 2 diabetes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heart disease;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dental cavities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about sweetened beverages, watch this<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fVBb9x6yblU?feature=shared\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;En mode ado video<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong><strong>Teens are more sensitive to the effects of caffeine contained in energy drinks.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Possible effects of drinking a large amount of caffeine include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Difficulty sleeping;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agitation, irritability and nervousness;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A rapid or abnormal heart rate;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dehydration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Regular caffeine consumption can also cause a dependency<\/strong>. When you stop consuming it, you may feel symptoms such as drowsiness, depressed mood and headaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Calculation of maximum caffeine intake:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For young people 18 years of age and under, it is recommended not to exceed 2.5 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight per day.&nbsp;<\/strong>For a teen weighing 55 kg, that means 138 mg of caffeine.&nbsp;<strong>The amount of caffeine in just one energy drink may therefore exceed the daily limit for young people.&nbsp;<\/strong>It is also important to know that other foods contain caffeine, for example, chocolate, cola soft drinks and, of course, coffee and tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n<div class=\"accordions-block\">\r\n        \n<div class=\"accordion\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\r\n    <h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\r\n        <a class=\"accordion-link\" role=\"button\" href=\"#panel-are-energy-drinks-a-good-choice-for-an-energy-boost-329\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-are-energy-drinks-a-good-choice-for-an-energy-boost-329\">\r\n            Are energy drinks a good choice for an energy boost?        <\/a>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div class=\"accordion-panel\" id=\"panel-are-energy-drinks-a-good-choice-for-an-energy-boost-329\" style=\"display: none;\">\r\n        \n\n<p class=\"accordion-content\">No, not in the long-term. Caffeine is a nervous system stimulant. It may reduce the feeling of fatigue.&nbsp; However, this effect is temporary and short-lived. &nbsp;In the long term, these drinks will leave you feeling even more tired and you\u2019ll continue to feel the need to drink caffeine to regain your energy. The best way to have energy is to move every day, eat well, and sleep!<\/p>\n\n\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"accordion\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\r\n    <h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\r\n        <a class=\"accordion-link\" role=\"button\" href=\"#panel-are-energy-drinks-designed-to-meet-the-bodys-needs-during-physical-activity-238\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-are-energy-drinks-designed-to-meet-the-bodys-needs-during-physical-activity-238\">\r\n            Are energy drinks designed to meet the body\u2019s needs during physical activity?        <\/a>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div class=\"accordion-panel\" id=\"panel-are-energy-drinks-designed-to-meet-the-bodys-needs-during-physical-activity-238\" style=\"display: none;\">\r\n        \n\n<p class=\"accordion-content\">No. Energy drink brands often sponsor athletes or sports events. However, several sports associations and experts advise against using energy drinks before, during and after practising a sport.&nbsp; Mixing energy drinks with playing a sport can cause cardiovascular problems in certain people.&nbsp; &nbsp;This can also hinder rehydration and cause nausea, diarrhea and bloating. Sometimes energy drinks get confused with sports drinks . Sports drinks, like Gatorade or Powerade, do not contain caffeine. They contain water, sugar and minerals. They are used to replace the minerals eliminated by perspiring during an intense sports activity. However, drinking water is still the best choice!<\/p>\n\n\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"accordion\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\r\n    <h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\r\n        <a class=\"accordion-link\" role=\"button\" href=\"#panel-are-there-any-risks-when-energy-drinks-and-alcohol-are-mixed-136\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-are-there-any-risks-when-energy-drinks-and-alcohol-are-mixed-136\">\r\n            Are there any risks when energy drinks and alcohol are mixed?        <\/a>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div class=\"accordion-panel\" id=\"panel-are-there-any-risks-when-energy-drinks-and-alcohol-are-mixed-136\" style=\"display: none;\">\r\n        \n\n<p class=\"accordion-content\">Yes. Energy drinks can temporarily mask feeling inebriated or the fatigue associated with alcohol consumption. This may cause teens to drink more alcohol, while they\u2019re blood alcohol hasn\u2019t decreased. It may also cause them to take more risks (impaired driving, having unprotected sex, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\r\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n<\/section>\r\n    <div class=\"container-deco deco-bottom container-bg-color-white\">\r\n            <\/div>\r\n\n\n\r\n    <div class=\"container-deco deco-top\">\r\n            <\/div>\r\n<section class=\"container-eklo add-table-content container-padding-4em\">\r\n\r\n    <div class=\"container\">\r\n                <div class=\"container-eklo-content eklo-deco\" >\r\n            <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To better support<\/h2>\n\n\n\r\n<div class=\"accordions-block\">\r\n        \n<div class=\"accordion\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\r\n    <h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\r\n        <a class=\"accordion-link\" role=\"button\" href=\"#panel-communication-258\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-communication-258\">\r\n            <i class=\"fa-classic fa-regular fa-comment-dots fa-xl\"><\/i>Communication        <\/a>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div class=\"accordion-panel\" id=\"panel-communication-258\" style=\"display: none;\">\r\n        \n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your teen drinks energy drinks, show an interest in what they drink. Ask them questions to understand why they drink it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If necessary, dispel certain myths about how energy drinks affect their health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give your teen the real information, without dramatizing or trivializing!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talk to your teen about the risks that come with mixing energy drinks and alcohol.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"accordion\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\r\n    <h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\r\n        <a class=\"accordion-link\" role=\"button\" href=\"#panel-support-711\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-support-711\">\r\n            <i class=\"fa-classic fa-regular fa-thumbs-up fa-xl\"><\/i>Support        <\/a>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div class=\"accordion-panel\" id=\"panel-support-711\" style=\"display: none;\">\r\n        \n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask your teen questions about their energy drink consumption and their friends consumption. Help your teen think about how their consumption of these drinks is influenced by their friends and marketing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When an ad for energy drinks comes up, take the opportunity to start a discussion about them with your teen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a conversation with your teen about alternatives to using energy drinks. For example, if your teen uses energy drinks while playing sports, replacing them with water and a snack they like (fruit and nuts, smoothie, vegetables and humus or cheese, granola bar and yogurt, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"accordion\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\r\n    <h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\r\n        <a class=\"accordion-link\" role=\"button\" href=\"#panel-supervision-guidance-284\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-supervision-guidance-284\">\r\n            <i class=\"fa-classic fa-regular fa-eye fa-xl\"><\/i>Supervision\/Guidance        <\/a>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div class=\"accordion-panel\" id=\"panel-supervision-guidance-284\" style=\"display: none;\">\r\n        \n\n<p class=\"accordion-content\">If you have any concerns about your teen\u2019s energy drink consumption:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Calculate the recommended caffeine limit for your teen based on their weight (see the box \u201cCalculation of maximum caffeine intake\u201d above).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evaluate your teen\u2019s caffeine consumption with them.
