With just a few clicks, teens can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find information on the web.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Browse various websites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use social media.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Play online games.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And much more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Online, teens express their opinions, interact with other young people, and can develop new relationships. Indeed, the virtual sphere is an environment in which teens evolve and have a variety of experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The digital sphere: advantages and challenges!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The digital age has many advantages. It provides access to a wealth of information in just a few clicks. It also makes it easy and quick to get in touch with friends and family. It allows young people to stay connected with their family and peers, no matter where they are. In the virtual world, teens can also explore and assert their identity. Through digital technology, young people communicate and can form connections, for example via social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, its use also presents certain challenges. For example, young people do not necessarily have access to the other person&#8217;s reactions when they chat online, which can complicate communication. In addition, the digital sphere can give an impression of anonymity, when in reality everything young people do online leaves a trace. It can also be difficult for teens to recognize misinformation. Finding a balance in their screen use can also be a challenge for young people. In addition, sometimes people with malicious intentions come into contact with teens. Young people may also face cyberbullying (for more information on cyberbullying, see our <a href=\"https:\/\/enmodeado.ca\/en\/boite-a-outils\/cyberbullying\/\">fact sheet<\/a> on the subject).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Citizenship in the digital age: a skill to be developed.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The digital world can therefore be a source of concern for parents. Some parents ask themselves questions such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What content is my child viewing on the web?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What information are they sharing?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who are the people my child is talking to on the internet?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is my teenager witnessing or experiencing cyberbullying?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These questions are entirely legitimate. But rest assured! As a parent, you can help your teenager develop their digital citizenship skills. Digital citizenship refers to several skills, including the ability to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Behave respectfully online, both towards other internet users and the content they view. Indeed, it is important to respect copyright and intellectual property rights for tools available on the web!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protect personal information, particularly by recognizing various types of fraud and controlling applications&#8217; access to data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use critical judgment when it comes to information presented on the web in order to recognize misinformation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use screens in a balanced way for physical and psychological well-being.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The next section offers some suggestions to help you support your teenager&#8217;s citizenship development in the digital age.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n<\/section>\r\n    <div class=\"container-deco deco-bottom container-bg-color-white\">\r\n            <\/div>\r\n\n\n\r\n    <div class=\"container-deco deco-top\">\r\n            <\/div>\r\n<section class=\"container-eklo add-table-content container-padding-4em\">\r\n\r\n    <div class=\"container\">\r\n                <div class=\"container-eklo-content eklo-deco\" >\r\n            <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To better support<\/h2>\n\n\n\r\n<div class=\"accordions-block\">\r\n        \n<div class=\"accordion\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\r\n    <h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\r\n        <a class=\"accordion-link\" role=\"button\" href=\"#panel-communication-562\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-communication-562\">\r\n            <i class=\"fa-classic fa-regular fa-comment-dots fa-xl\"><\/i>Communication        <\/a>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div class=\"accordion-panel\" id=\"panel-communication-562\" style=\"display: none;\">\r\n        \n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Make your teen aware of the importance of having respectful speech and behavior online<\/strong>. Draw a parallel between offline and online activities. Would it be appropriate to say such things or take such actions toward someone else at school? These principles also apply in the virtual world. Make your teen aware of the reach of their words or actions in the digital sphere; in just a few clicks, they can go around the world.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Explain to your teen that freedom of expression has its limits<\/strong>. When words or actions hurt or are likely to hurt another person or a group of individuals, they are never acceptable. To learn more about the limits of freedom of expression, you can read \u00c9ducaloi\u2019s article <a href=\"https:\/\/educaloi.qc.ca\/en\/legal-news\/freedom-of-expression\/\"><em>What is Freedom of Expression? <\/em><\/a>or watch their video <em><a href=\"https:\/\/educaloi.qc.ca\/en\/publications\/freedom-of-expression-internet\/\">Freedom of Expression on the Internet<\/a>.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Talk with your teen about protecting their personal information<\/strong>. Explore with them:\n\n \t\nWhat information they consider \u201cprivate\u201d?\n\n \t\nWhat information, according to your teen, would be appropriate to share on social media? For what reasons?\n\n \t\nWhat are the terms of use of an application? Does this application request access to your teen\u2019s microphone or photos? What are the issues with granting access to their information?\n\n \tIn this way, you develop your teen\u2019s critical thinking and help them reflect on their personal boundaries and protect their privacy. Also, <strong>remind your teen that it is important to obtain the consent of all people appearing in a post before making it public<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Share with your teen various ways to increase online safety<\/strong> (for example, not sharing passwords, only accepting people they know on social media, learning about types of fraud to recognize them, only downloading documents or videos from reliable and secure sites, etc.). We also present some of these tips in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Qly3FiUwHSw\">video clip on the subject<\/a>, feel free to watch it!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"accordion\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\r\n    <h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\r\n        <a class=\"accordion-link\" role=\"button\" href=\"#panel-support-892\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-support-892\">\r\n            <i class=\"fa-classic fa-regular fa-thumbs-up fa-xl\"><\/i>Support        <\/a>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div class=\"accordion-panel\" id=\"panel-support-892\" style=\"display: none;\">\r\n        \n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Support your teen in exploring the digital world so they can navigate it safely<\/strong>. Explore together the various apps your teen uses and set security and privacy settings as a team. To help you with this process, we have developed <a href=\"https:\/\/enmodeado.ca\/en\/video-clips\/\">online safety tutorials<\/a>!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Equip your teen to deal with misinformation<\/strong>. Talk with your teen: What do you consider a reliable information source? Explore different websites and try together to distinguish real news from fake news. To support you in this, we invite you to consult <a href=\"https:\/\/pausetonecran.com\/la-desinformation-comment-eviter-de-tomber-dans-le-piege\/\">PAUSE\u2019s fact sheet<\/a> ( French only) on the subject.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Support your teen in managing their emotions and developing empathy<\/strong>. Encourage them to calm down before reacting on social media and to remember there is a real person behind the screen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Equip your teen to intervene in situations of violence and\/or bullying in the digital sphere, including sextortion and non-consensual sharing of intimate images<\/strong> (for example, reporting the post, expressing disagreement, talking to a trusted adult, etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Offer your support to your teen if needed<\/strong>. Be alert to signs that your teen might be struggling with their digital use, such as when your teen: Shows signs of agitation when receiving a message on their phone; Has difficulty stopping playing online games; Sees their social relationships deteriorate related to screen use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"accordion\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\r\n    <h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\r\n        <a class=\"accordion-link\" role=\"button\" href=\"#panel-supervision-guidance-389\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-supervision-guidance-389\">\r\n            <i class=\"fa-classic fa-regular fa-eye fa-xl\"><\/i>Supervision\/Guidance        <\/a>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div class=\"accordion-panel\" id=\"panel-supervision-guidance-389\" style=\"display: none;\">\r\n        \n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Talk with your teen about their online activities while respecting their privacy. <\/strong>Show interest in the websites and social media platforms your teen visits and discuss their online habits, for example:\n\n \tWho are the people your teen interacts with online?\n \tWhat type of content do they view and share on social media?\n \tHow much time does your teen spend online in a day?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Set up various parental controls, especially to limit your teen\u2019s exposure to content inappropriate for their age<\/strong>. Before doing so, discuss these parental controls with your teen and explain why you want to implement them.
